Learn the four associations

A common Rider–Waite–Smith reading convention associates Wands with fire, Cups with water, Swords with air, and Pentacles with earth. These are symbolic associations, not physical properties of the cards. They provide a starting vocabulary: initiative for Wands, feelings and connection for Cups, ideas and communication for Swords, and practical resources for Pentacles. Other traditions can use different correspondences.

Ask four questions about one situation

For a hypothetical group project, Wands might prompt What are we trying to begin? Cups might ask How are people relating? Swords might ask Which assumption needs discussion? Pentacles might ask What time and materials are available? Every suit can be relevant to the same project. Avoid treating a Cups card as proof of romance or a Pentacles card as a promise of money.

Let number and image refine the suit

The suit gives you a broad area of attention; the particular card adds a situation. Ace of Cups and Five of Cups share a suit but their images invite different reflections. Compare their visible details and consult the full meanings before using a broad suit keyword. A spread with several Swords may invite attention to language or competing ideas, without proving that conflict or anxiety is inevitable.

Try it yourself

Choose one ordinary plan. Write one Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles question about it. Then compare Ace of Cups with Five of Cups: note one shared theme and two differences. Finish with a question that needs real information rather than a symbolic answer.
