Journaling and reviewing interpretations

Record a reading so that later review can distinguish your original interpretation from what happened afterward.

Reflect and practice · Lesson 15 · About 5 minutes with practice

  1. Record the first reading
  2. Add later information
  3. Keep matches and misses
A practice map for journaling and reviewing interpretations. Read the explanation below, then try the exercise.

Write the first interpretation before reviewing

Record the date, question, selection method, spread positions, card names, and orientations. Write what you noticed and your initial interpretation before looking for a later connection. Keep observation, interpretation, and chosen action in separate lines. You do not need to record another person's identifying details or intimate information for the exercise to be useful.

Set a modest review point

Choose when you will return to the entry, perhaps after completing the small action you named. At review, add new information without rewriting the original interpretation. Note what fitted, what did not, and what remained too vague to evaluate. If you only preserve apparent matches, the journal can make the reading seem more specific than it was. An honest review includes misses and ordinary explanations.

Keep records where you intend to keep them

Use paper or a private place you understand. If a tool offers local storage, check what is stored, on which device, and how to remove it; do not assume that a journal is synchronized or backed up. Sharing is a separate decision. Before posting an excerpt in the forum, remove private details and describe the question in a way that does not identify someone who did not agree to participate.

Try it yourself

Create five headings: Observation, Interpretation, Choice, New information, and What did not fit. Complete the first three for a Daily Reflection card. Leave the last two for a later review. Add a stopping point and a reminder that you can discard a journal entry instead of sharing it.

Check your understanding

What makes a later journal review more informative?

  1. Keeping the original interpretation and recording both matches and misses.
  2. Editing the first interpretation to fit what happened.
  3. Saving only readings that seemed accurate.
Reveal the answer and explanation

Keeping the original interpretation and recording both matches and misses.

Preserving the original entry reduces hindsight editing. Matches, misses, uncertainty, and ordinary explanations all help you evaluate the usefulness of the exercise.
